Living in California for so long, I was able to shoot many times at the beach and create beautiful lasting images for families all around. Whether it was locals wanting to capture a location that they also loved so much or people traveling into town, I was always met on the beach with smiles and happiness for being at one of their favorite places!
Now that I live in Utah, I don’t get to shoot as often as I used to in California, but I love getting to go back and do shoots there and one of the main places I always book is at the beach. A few locations I love are the following:
Baker Beach
Montara State Beach
Chrissy Field
Mori point (Pacifica)
Natural Bridges
Pescadero Bay
Half Moon Bay
Sutro Baths
Lands End
Rancho Siempre Verde
I have talked in the past about what to wear for a family session and I wanted to touch on a few ideas you could do for a family session at the beach.
- You can never go wrong dressing formal for your family shoot. Whether it’s a landmark or the beach, having formal attire dresses up the entire shoot.
- Have the girls in something flowey so that you can see movement in your images. Having a flowey gown and the wind at the beach are a match made in heaven! They help to create such magical images and is a great place to start with what to wear for a family session.
- Let your kids be barefoot, and even do it yourself! It will make them want to run around and put their toes in the sand! Don’t focus to much on controlling them but rather let them explore and your kids really take in the surrounding. Your photographer will be able to get such fun candid moments by letting go a little bit!
